The University of Manchester’s Baroque
In the last five years of his short life, Henry Purcell’s career took a (literally) dramatic new turn, as he became the London theatre’s most prolific and celebrated composer, writing music that enabled him to demonstrate the full range of his expressive powers. In this lunchtime concert, The University’s specialist period-instrument ensemble celebrates Henry Purcell’s stage music with suites from his operas The Prophetess, King Arthur and The Fairy Queen, showcasing the spectacular large-scale orchestral colours that characterise his late output.
